The admissions lounge is a comfortable space near the operating unit. You are welcomed there by a reception officer or nurse and prepared for surgery.
A patient admitted for surgery will either go to the admissions lounge or to the nursing ward after registration. We will let you know in advance which is applicable to you.
Admission hour
One working day before the operation, we will call you to give you the exact admission time. If you are admitted on Monday, we will call you on Friday. If you did not receive a phone call, please report to the location and time stated on your admission letter.
Preparation at home
- You must be sober for the operation. You may eat a light meal up to six hours before admission and drink clear liquids such as water or coffee without milk up to two hours before. You can read more in the leaflet 'Fasting before an operation' (90.64 KB).
- Take your morning medication with a small sip of water as discussed with your doctor.
- Depilate the surgery area with clippers or lady shaver. Do not use a razor blade. If you do not have clippers or lady shaver, you will be depilated at the admissions lounge.
- Remove make-up, nail polish, rings and piercings.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Make sure you bring all the necessary for your registration, treatment and stay.
Admission via the lounge
Unable to attend or late? Notify the medical department that scheduled your surgery as soon as possible.
Register
- Register via a registration kiosk at the central reception (entrance 11) and take a seat in the waiting room.
- An employee at the 'Admissions and registration' desk will then check your details and put an identification bracelet on you. Never remove this bracelet yourself.
- You will then be directed to the admissions lounge. A family member or relative can accompany you to the lounge (entrance 50, route 626 or entrance 12, route 1240).
- Your companion can wait in the cafeteria or elsewhere in the hospital if you wish.
In the admissions lounge
- A reception officer or nurse will welcome you.
- When it is time for the operation, the nurse will accompany you to the changing room. There, you will put on an operation shirt, a bathrobe, anti-embolism stockings and anti-slip socks.
- You will also be given a tote bag in which you will store your clothes and other personal items. You will leave this bag in the admissions lounge; we will take it to your room or the day hospital. You may keep your glasses or hearing aid on until you reach the operating theatre.
- The nurse will fill in the admission file with you and perform the last preparatory tasks so that you are ready for the operation: e.g. help you put on anti-embolism stockings or depilate.
- The anaesthetist comes to collect you and together you go to the operating theatre.
After the operation
- You will be taken in a bed to the recovery room. When you are well awake, a patient transport worker or the nurse from the nursing ward will take you to your room or to the day hospital.
- The nurse will notify your attendant that you are there.
