Do you not have Belgian health insurance? Always contact your healthcare insurer before your hospital admission. If your insurance company does not agree to the treatment being provided abroad, you may have to pay the invoice yourself before the treatment starts. For more information, please contact cel SoFIA.

Dutch patients
You are insured with CZ, DSW/Stad Holland, VGZ, ONVZ, Zilveren Kruis, Caresq, Zorg en Zekerheid or de Amersfoortse
UZ Gent has an agreement with CZ, DSW/Stad Holland, VGZ, ONVZ, Zilveren Kruis, Caresq, Zorg en Zekerheid and de Amersfoortse.
Are you affiliated with one of these? Then we will send the invoice for contracted care directly to your health insurer. Sometimes this applies to the entire care package, sometimes only for certain treatments.
- Hospital costs are settled directly with your health insurer as long as the conditions of the agreement are met.
- Do you still receive an invoice? Then you pay it yourself. Afterwards, you can reclaim (part of) the costs from your health insurer.
Below you will find more information about the administrative procedures and the request for authorisation (in Dutch). These documents are also available at the Admissions and registration desk.

You are insured with a different Dutch healthcare insurer
Prior to your treatment, ask your health insurer for a guarantor declaration (garantieverklaring) or form S2 . If you do not have that document, you will have to pay the costs in advance yourself.
- Guarantor declaration: the costs will be settled directly with your health insurer, if this is stated in the declaration.
- Form S2 (for planned admission) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC - for emergency care): the costs are settled directly with a Belgian health insurance fund. However, you pay a deposit of at least 150 euros per 7-day stay if staying in a shared room.
You will receive an invoice for the amount you have to pay yourself. Afterwards, you may be able to reclaim (part of) the cost through your health insurance company.

European Union employees and their dependants
- Ask for a guarantor declaration (garantieverklaring) from your employer before your treatment.
- With that guarantor declaration the costs will be settled directly with your insurance.
Students
- Are you a student from an EU member state, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland, Liechtenstein or Australia? With a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC), the costs will be settled directly with a Belgian health insurance fund. However, you pay a deposit of at least 150 euros per 7-day stay if staying in a shared room.
- Are you not insured in one of the above countries? Then you need a guarantor declaration (garantieverklaring). If you don't have one, you have to pay all the costs for your treatment in advance.
Belgians with private insurance
- Ask for a guarantor declaration (garantieverklaring) from your private insurance before your treatment. If you don't have one, you have to pay all the costs for your treatment in advance.
- The costs will be settled directly with your insurance, if this is stated in the guarantor declaration.
- Do you receive an invoice? Then you pay it yourself. Afterwards, you can reclaim (part of) the costs from your insurance company.
People without legal residence or with specific insurance status
- Do you have proof of identity and a payment commitment from a competent authority such as the OCMW, the Red Cross or Fedasil? Then UZ Gent will settle the bill directly with that authority.
