Anaesthesia
Read all about anaesthesia or sedation on the web pages of the Anaesthetics department.
Preparing for surgery
Patients with a healthy lifestyle usually recover faster after surgery. Even small behavioural changes in the period before the procedure have an impact.
Follow this advice to reduce the risk of complications:
- Exercise regularly
- Do not smoke (or smoke less)
- Do not drink (or drink less) alcohol
- Get enough sleep
- Eat healthily and drink enough water
- Do not use drugs
Being sober
From a set time before the operation, you should not eat or drink. How long in advance depends on the type of food and drink, the quantity, the procedure and the type of anaesthetic.
Medication
Follow the instructions you were given by the anaesthetist. Swallow the medication you need to take on the day of surgery with half a glass of water.
On admission, bring your completed (74.33 KB) "pdf"medication schedule with you, together with the original packages of your home medication if necessary.
Body care
- Wash completely in the 24 hours before surgery.
- Depilate the surgery area with clippers or a lady shaver. Do not use a razor: this sometimes causes small wounds that increase the risk of infection.
- Do not wear make-up, nail polish, jewellery, piercings, lenses or dentures on the day of surgery.
Other advice
If you use a CPAP device at home for sleeping or a glycaemic device, please bring it with you on the day of surgery.
Do you have a pacemaker (PM) or implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)? Tell us during your consultation at the pre-admission centre so we can take it into account during the procedure.
