Who can call on the solidarity fund?
Patients can turn to the social workers at Patient Social Services for various forms of support. Sometimes, during counselling, it turns out that a patient has insufficient resources to meet certain needs. In that case, the social worker will check whether the Francis Colardyn Solidarity Fund can provide material or financial assistance.
The fund considers each request. It grants aid based on an examination of the social and financial situation of the patient concerned.
Among others, underprivileged families and people without residence are eligible. Aid is also granted to those who have a replacement income, are hospitalised, in acute need and cannot call on family or friends.
What help can the solidarity fund provide?
Aid depends on individual needs:
- material assistance such as clothing, footwear, toiletries, baby food or a food parcel upon discharge
- exceptionally, an allowance for the purchase of medical equipment in home care such as aspiration probes, nappies, pee-pants or aids for children
- financial assistance for public transport or night transport in crisis situations, for example
Several organisations organise supervised holiday camps for children who are chronically ill or disabled. Parents who cannot afford to participate in such a camp are eligible for an allowance from the fund.
There are no allowances for hospital bills and medication.
