As a university hospital, Ghent University Hospital has the expertise and infrastructure to support critically ill patients using a heart-lung machine, known as ECMO or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. Ghent University Hospital has six ECMO machines, one of which is specifically designed for paediatric patients.
Care is provided by an experienced and trained multidisciplinary team, which can care for and monitor patients round the clock, seven days a week. We care for adults requiring ECMO in the Cardiac Surgery Intensive Care Unit, and children in the Paediatrics Intensive Care Unit. Thanks to intensive training and extensive expertise, our team ensures optimal results.
