Intensive care and specialised wound care
The Burns centre at UZ Gent has the latest equipment to to treat victims with severe burns. The high-tech centre accommodates six patients who are treated in high care units. These are specially equipped single rooms for intensive care and highly specialised wound care.
The complex care is provided by a specialised burns team led by plastic surgeons and (paediatric) intensivists. They work together with nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, social workers, psychologists and pressure specialists.
Care coordinators accompany burn patients during their admission, but also after their discharge at burn consultations.
Low care and ambulatory care
Adults with limited burns are admitted to the Plastic surgery nursing unit.
Children with limited burns are admitted to the Children's hospital. Patients with burns are also followed up during burn consultations at the Plastic surgery out-patient clinic.
Aftercare
For aftercare, badly burned patients can go to the Rehabilitation centre. UZ Gent is the only hospital in Belgium to have both a Burns centre and a Rehabilitation centre on its campus.
